This thread belongs in Tech Temple.

Seems to be rather common for that GPU http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-70292.html

nVidia cards do tend to get hot.

you can use programs like msi afterburner to turn up your fan speed

Moved to Tech Temple. As I recall this was a common problem for the 8000 series; it generated a lot of heat (though not so much with newer NVIDIA cards--my GTX 460 is currently running 27C on idle). Not much you can do about it really except try to push more airflow through your case. As Mylespol suggested one method you can do this is increasing fan speed with various software. You can also try installing more fans in your case. Personally, I would just get another card at this point myself. The 8000 series is getting pretty dated and the newer cards are a lot more power/heat efficient.

EDIT: And it goes without saying that you should buy a can of air or take your computer to an air compressor once in a while to blow out all the dust. Dust collection can cause overheating. If you haven't blown out your 8800 GT in a while, consider doing that as well.

mini basicly said it all.

if this is uncommon with you, and your fan speeds are high but not going down...

i used to touch the fan on my GPU just becasue i was...wierd, but in the long road it taught me when my fan was dieing, i recently had a fan motor die so becasue of my crazy knowlege i could touch the fan and go "wow that is NOT af fast as it should be"

TL:DR, check your ACTUAL FAN see if its spinning fast, casue the motor could be dieing
