Customizing Windows 7 & 8

Post by Jaysp656 on Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:23 am

Customization is really important to me, especially with my OS (Operating System).

Here are some examples of free custom themes for Win 7 (& Win8 )

Links should work now without asking for you to register on another site
Spoiler:

Thought I'd throw that out there. There are a lot more out there for Win7. Only a handful for Win8 though Sad
If anyone is interested I'll say how to get these themes working and such.

Edit: Win8 themes are still experimental. I've had a one "problem". So in the possibility that the computer can't boot into Windows (black screen coming on and off every two seconds or so. this is usually caused by tampering with a theme file) just do a system restore to before the point of tampering and/or before adding the theme.
This is a "bug" I've found that some of the guys at VirtualCustoms are working on.

i have blade 2, i also have a custom hatsune Miku one, although it isnt optimized very well so some of the images are distorted.

lets also not forget about rainmeter
Spoiler:

and dreamscene, it basicly lets you set ".wmv" and a few other select video types as your desktop, i recommend a 1/2 decent system to run it smoothly
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-7-dreamscene-activator-released
becasue it changes a registry value, IT MUST BE RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR but, after activating, the .EXE can be deleted unless for whatever reason you wants to deactivate the ABILITY to use it.

a short clip of my desktop, using both

then you have thinks like rocketdock basicly a Mac item bar, fully customizable
Spoiler:
heres mine on the right screen
Spoiler:

then you have a slew of gadgets, such as a GPU monitor, a CPU montor, (both on the above image) this is why i love windows, i can honestly say this is MY computer, and not just like every ol mac out there with different backgrounds

Try looking up skin packs for xp. That will give some stuff but I think Win 7 has the most. Sadly I got Win 8 now Sad

You can actually get some pretty decent skins with Windows XP. I still have an ancient screenshot of my old XP desktop on deviantArt. Just use the UXTheme patcher and download the Luna Element skin and it looks pretty slick.

I haven't bothered doing any significant customization since upgrading to Windows 7 because the interface already looks attractive enough to me. Though that may change if I upgrade to Windows 8 because I think the new interface looks terrible.

dont go to win8, especially if you game, alot of people (valve for 1) has showed great distaste for win8.

also, win8=win7+shit you dont want

so...yea, just stick with 7

The only thing I've noted about Win8 is that it has a faster boot time but I've "removed" or hidden most of the Metro look. I also wouldn't recommend "upgrading" No

The only theme that looks real good in Win8 is the Equinox theme above. Blade is my favorite though.

I can't use the Miku theme Crying or Very sad No Crying or Very sad

Wow. I spent like a month trying to find good themes to auto load and install on my comp. I pretty much gave up. This thread gives me hope! I love customizing the crud out of it too...however I have resisted the urge since my clean reinstall..

that is becasue its a fresh OS (not install) win7 has been loaded with updates by now meaning the OS is a bit less stable meaning it will take longer to boot (even on my SSD it takes about 30sec from off to desktop) a brand new OS has less to boot so ofc its going to be faster, also keeping your startup programs in check is a good thing too

That is only partially correct. When Win8 shutsdown it doesn't shutdown completely. It has what's called a hybrid shutdown where it saves some files to disc before turning off. This allows it to come back up quicker because it has fewer things to initialize at startup. Also if you use the "Start" screen instead of the desktop it seems even faster because the metro crap is more or less lightweight or part of what is saved on file during hybrid boot. Still not worth it though.

oh, yea, hybrid has been around since vista, maybe even XP, but i know for sure vista had it.

so, your not shutting down, you going into hybernation, however, if you unplug the computer...does it still shut down? theres actaully a 2gb sector on your hard drive saved for a hybernation shutdown, it basicly saves where your at right there to the hard drive

This is different than hibernation. My Win8 has the option to sleep, hibernate, and hybrid shutdown. It is like a mix between shutdown and hibernation if that makes sense

I think this may help explain it

holy cow, i personally dont even use hibernation, although i should, but with my SSD, i get home, turn on my computer, take off my shoes and its already running.

that is REALLY fast, but the comparrisons are for a win7 cold boot to a win8 new fast boot. is there still a regular shutdown?

Yeah there are some ways to force/enable full shutdown. Restarting works like normal.

I'm not sure. But it does seem to be a little faster. Even with all the customizing stuff.

The full boot seems to take 3-10 seconds longer.

Great. Then there are a lot more themes that you can use than if you had XP or 8.

There are several ways to patch you system to work with custom themes. What I've used in the past is

1. Theme Resource Changer (x64 & x86): Run this first. And use the correct one (x64 or x86). it does matter.

2. UniversalThemePatcher_20090409: Then patch the three relevant dll files with this. Just click "patch" beside each one. After that Restart your computer.

3. If you want to find main source of these themes go to VirtualCustoms.net. (Ony thing is you have to register to see the pictures and links). If you don't want to do that I can send you some of the themes that I have gotten before.

4. Put the folder with the name of the theme into "C:\Windows\Resources\Themes". Also put the {nameofthemehere}.msstyles file into the same directory.

5. If you want a more advanced customization to you can use a program called "7tsp"
which can switch out some of the system files so that the theme is more complete. Not going to go to much into it right now. Many themes come with 7tsp themepacks.

If you have any difficulty feel free to pm me. I can say this method (1 and 2) work as I've used it on several computers at my college and the themes worked perfectly.

Yeah, I've done all that before. Sometimes it wouldn't change the start orb and such though. I might tinker with it again. I also already have an account xD IDR what it is though hahaha xD

There are other programs that do the same thing. Maybe using another one might work better.

I'm running Windows 8 pro, and I found a stable theme on Deviant Art. I used Uxstyle to patch my .dll files but the program also makes a backup of the original dlls so it's perfectly safe.

My Theme:
Spoiler:

You can download this theme here. But I changed my taskbar icons manually I learned how to do that here . And I get my wallpapers from here. I hope this helps you guys customize.
