Nope, never heard of them before. I swear I've heard that before though so maybe it was said somewhere else.

Takachiho is a town located in the northernmost part of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's big four islands.
Takachiho is well known for yokagura, ancient dance rituals performed throughout the night during the winter months.
This tradition began over 800 years ago, and the dances have been passed down through generations in all the villages in the area.
Each village offers variations on costumes and the schedule and order of the dances, but all of them are known as “Takachiho yokagura.”

The Kitakami Tenshochi Sakura Festival will be held beside the Kitakami River, which runs through Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture.
During the festival period, the famous koinobori (carp streamers) will be flown above the river.
The sight of around 300 carp streamers flying majestically is amazing to behold. The festival will be held from April 15th through May 6th

ALONG THE BANKS OF THE SHIRAISHI RIVER is where you can enjoy the Ogawara Sakura Festival.
The only place in Miyagi Prefecture amongst the top 100 cherry blossom viewing locales of Japan,
it is said to be a place of 'hitome senbonzajura' –- a thousand cherry trees at a glance!

The festival takes place on the plains along the river. Here you can enjoy many events including cherry blossom viewing from a yakatabune (Japanese-style houseboat),
evening cherry blossom light-up viewing, and of course the simple pleasure of enjoy a bento boxed lunch under the blooming trees.

Ritsurin Garden is one of the most famous and most beautiful historical gardens in Japan. The garden is situated in the city of Takamatsu.
Created in the 17th century, in 1875, the garden was designated a prefectural garden and opened to the public.
In 1953, Ritsurin was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The many ponds and streams are full of koi and the pond at the Tea House has benches where visitors may sit and feed the fish from breadsticks purchased at the Tea House.

Shamisen

Post by Keiichi Morisato on Thu Apr 18, 2013 12:35 am

You ever seen one of these ???

I'll tell you now if you think it's a banjo, you're wrong...

It's called a Shamisen

A three-stringed, Japanese musical instrument played with a plectrum called a bachi.
The Japanese pronunciation is usually "shamisen" but sometimes "jamisen" when used as a suffix (e.g., Tsugaru-jamisen). (In western Japan, and often in Edo-period sources, it is sometimes "samisen."

The shamisen is a plucked stringed instrument. Its construction follows a model similar to that of a guitar or a banjo, with a neck and strings stretched across a resonating body. The neck of the shamisen is fretless and slimmer than that of a guitar or banjo. The body, called the dō (胴?), resembles a drum, having a hollow body that is taut front and back with skin, in the manner of a banjo. The skin used depends on the genre of music and the skill of the player. Student shamisen often use dog skin, and sometimes plastic, as they are cheaper to replace, and more durable. The shamisen of professional players are often taut in cat skin, as it is more delicate and expensive. It is said that the best sound quality is produced from a shamisen bound in cat skin. In the past a special type of paper was used and recently various types of plastics are being tried. On the skin of some of the best shamisen, the position of the cat's nipples can still be seen

PHOTO OF THE WEEK
The Sumida River flows through Tokyo, branching from the Arakawa River at Iwabuchi and flowing into Tokyo Bay.
Of the 26 bridges that cross the river, the Kachidoki Bridge is the only drawbridge. While it has not been raised since 1970, it does look splendid at night!

Onigiri, ubiquitous triangle-shaped rice balls are pretty much the ideal food–
simple to make, healthy, cheap, easy to pack and carry, and suitable for every taste, and can be eaten on-the-go.
